Freelance packages: 5 structures with example pricing
Selling loose hours ties your income to your time. A package ties it to a deliverable. Here are five structures that work for freelancers and consultants, what an example of each looks like in pounds, and the one mistake to avoid with each.
The fixed-scope project
Best for: Freelancers whose work has a clear, single deliverable.
£1,800 for one custom landing page
- Custom landing page design and build
- 2 rounds of revisions
- Mobile-responsive output
- Launch-day support
Watch out: Write down what's explicitly NOT included, or "just one more page" creeps in for free.
The monthly retainer
Best for: Consultants and freelancers whose clients need ongoing support.
£650/month for ongoing content support
- 12 planned and scheduled Instagram posts per month
- Weekly content calendar
- One monthly review call
Watch out: Cap revisions and turnaround time per month, or the retainer quietly becomes unlimited.
The sprint
Best for: Experts whose clients want a fast result, not a long engagement.
£950 for a 5-day website audit
- Pre-sprint intake questionnaire
- Website audit and prioritised fix list
- Written report delivered within 5 working days
- One walkthrough call to discuss recommendations
Watch out: Sprints only work with a hard start and end date — no drifting.
The productised package
Best for: Freelancers ready to sell the same outcome repeatedly.
£1,200 for "The Brand Refresh"
- New logo design
- 3 core brand colours
- One-page style guide
- 10 social media templates
Watch out: Productising only works if you actually deliver the same thing each time — resist customising it per client.
The milestone project
Best for: Freelancers handling larger engagements that span several weeks.
£4,500 total for a full website rebuild
- Paid in 3 milestones of £1,500 each
- Milestone 1: kickoff and approved wireframes
- Milestone 2: approved design
- Milestone 3: launch and handover
Watch out: Define exactly what "approved" means for each milestone in writing before starting, or payment gets stuck on vague sign-off.
How to pick yours
Three questions settle it: what deliverable are you actually handing over, how repeatable is the work across clients, and does the client need an ongoing relationship or a finished thing?
If the work is repeatable and the client wants an ongoing relationship, a retainer or productised package probably wins. If they want a defined thing by a defined date, go fixed-scope or sprint. For bigger engagements, milestones keep cashflow steady while both sides stay aligned.
Every example above is a starting point, not a rule. Your specialism, your speed and your clients should move the number up or down.
